Bride and groom celebrating at a tropical destination-style wedding in Singapore

Bare feet on warm sand. A sky turning gold right as the vows are said. A garden that looks grown just for this one afternoon, not decorated for it. Most couples carry this picture around long before they book anything, and it can come true closer to home than they expect. The scenery, the resort setting, the unhurried weekend, everything that makes a destination wedding feel special, is available to couples planning a destination-style wedding in Singapore, right here in the city. The beaches are here.

So are the hillside gardens and the waterfront resorts, and the sky still turns gold at the same hour it would anywhere else. And because everything is local, the caterer, the florist and the photographer you would trust with the day are close by too.

This guide is for couples chasing exactly that feeling, the one a destination-style wedding in Singapore is built to give. There’s a lot of noise out there about venues, so we’ve kept this to what actually decides whether the day works. Which locations really deliver the destination feeling, the legal steps you need to marry here, and how to work with Singapore’s weather instead of getting caught out by it. Handle those three, and all that’s left to think about is how beautiful the day will be.

What Is a Destination-Style Wedding in Singapore?

Ask most people what a destination wedding is and they’ll describe travelling somewhere to get married, the place itself becoming half the memory. A destination-style wedding borrows that same feeling, a setting distinctive enough to remember, a celebration that becomes a story, without anyone having to board a plane. That’s the promise behind planning a destination-style wedding in Singapore, and delivering on it usually comes down to three things a standard hotel banquet doesn’t have.

  • A scenic, largely outdoor setting. Vows exchanged on a lawn, a terrace or a beach, not under conference-room lighting.
  • Hosted guests, not just invited ones. Rooms often reserved together at the resort, so relatives flying in from different cities feel looked after the moment they land.
  • A weekend, not a single dinner. The celebration tends to spread across several events, a welcome evening or a farewell brunch alongside the main ceremony, which is what gives the whole thing the unhurried pace of an actual getaway.

Best Locations for a Destination-Style Wedding in Singapore

A handful of locations keep coming up when couples describe what they’re picturing, and they fall into three different moods, a resort escape on Sentosa, somewhere on the water on the mainland, or a garden ceremony in the city. There isn’t one obvious answer here, which is the point.

Sentosa, the Closest Thing to a Resort Escape

  1. Capella Singapore sits on a hill above the sea, wrapped in 30 acres of tropical garden, and its outdoor solemnisation spots, the sunset patio at Horizon’s Verge, the lawns at the Garden of Dreams, show up constantly in Singapore wedding photography.
  • Setting: hillside gardens with sea views, and a domed Grand Ballroom the hotel lists as holding up to 400 for the reception.
  • Why it fits: guests can stay on the property the whole weekend. That’s the hosted, multi-day rhythm that turns a wedding into an actual getaway instead of one evening out.
  1. Sofitel Singapore Sentosa spans 27 hectares of tropical woodland on the island’s southern tip, with outdoor solemnisations held at Spice Island Point, a clifftop lawn looking out over the South China Sea.
  • Setting: a clifftop ceremony, then the Straits Ballroom close by, where the light and greenery still feel present indoors.
  • Why it fits: the sheer scale of the grounds plus that sea view gives you the sense of escape couples look for in a resort weekend.
  1. Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa calls itself the only beachfront resort in Singapore, and that claim checks out. For couples who want to hear the waves during the ceremony rather than just see them in a photo later, this is the venue.
  • Setting: an outdoor lawn facing the ocean, with Siloso Beach itself an option for the reception.
  • Why it fits: bare feet, sand, sea, it’s the image most couples start with, and you get it without leaving the island.

Waterfront and skyline settings

  1. Raffles Marina is a yacht club on Singapore’s western edge, for couples who want water without the rest of the resort attached.
  • Setting: indoor and outdoor space right on the water, with the option of a yacht bringing the couple in.
  • Why it fits: an arrival like that carries most of what a destination-style setting is meant to give you, that sense of occasion.
  1. Gardens by the Bay trades the coastline for a skyline, a striking indoor space with Marina Bay as the backdrop instead.
  • Setting: flowers filling one side of the room, the city skyline on the other.
  • Why it fits: it’s an unmistakably-somewhere backdrop, the kind a resort would give you, set in the middle of the city.

A garden ceremony in the city

The Bandstand at the Singapore Botanic Gardens suits couples after the garden-party feeling on a smaller, more intimate scale, and it sits inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site, no resort booking required, just a permit.

  • Setting: an open-air pavilion, best for a compact ceremony with the reception held somewhere else afterward.
  • Good to know: NParks wants the permit application in at least 14 days ahead, approval doesn’t give you exclusive use of the surrounding lawns, and chairs aren’t allowed.
  • Why it fits: there’s not much else in the city with this kind of open-air charm and no resort stay attached.

All of this, capacity, ritual policies, permit availability, changes over time, so confirm the current details with each venue directly before you commit to a date. Our own post on why Sentosa wedding venues suit couples chasing a destination feel goes deeper into the island’s resorts specifically.

Is a Destination-Style Wedding in Singapore Legally Recognised?

A ceremony at a resort only becomes a legal marriage once the formal steps behind it are complete, and one real advantage of holding it here is that couples are not required to marry at the Registry of Marriages building itself. According to marriage.gov.sg, any venue can host the solemnisation, a hotel, a garden or somewhere else entirely, as long as the couple appoints a licensed solemniser from the ROM directory and declares the venue address on their marriage application.

Two things are worth planning around well in advance.

  • The 21-day notice period. The marriage application must be submitted, together with payment, at least 21 days before the solemnisation date, since this window gives the Registry time to process the notice.
  • Extra steps for a foreign partner. Where one partner is not a Singapore citizen or permanent resident, additional requirements apply, including a minimum period of physical presence in Singapore and supporting documents from that partner’s home country.

Both sets of conditions are set out in full on marriage.gov.sg, and our own ROM wedding checklist for couples walks through the same steps in more detail. In practice they take longer to arrange than most couples expect, so it pays to check them before invitations go out rather than after.

Can You Include Traditional Rituals at a Destination-Style Wedding in Singapore?

Yes, and it happens often enough that several Sentosa resorts now market themselves specifically on this combination. One couple held their Hindu fire ceremony on the lawn at Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa at dusk, with a mandap set beneath a large tree overlooking the sea, choosing the resort precisely because it allowed both an outdoor Indian ceremony and a beach-adjacent setting. Capella Singapore is likewise described by wedding planners as a popular choice among couples wanting a destination feel for a traditional Hindu wedding.

A little extra planning makes this easier.

  • Ask about fire ceremonies before you book. Policies differ widely between venues. Some hotels allow an open flame outdoors with advance notice and fire-safety approval, others do not permit it at all. Get the answer in writing before signing.
  • Plan around early timings. Auspicious hours tend to fall before dawn, so ask exactly how early the venue’s doors can open for setup, not just when the ceremony can start.
  • Have a backup for the ritual itself. When a resort won’t accommodate a fire ceremony, plenty of families simply split the day, the ritual happens at an approved temple hall or a venue with a fire pit already built in, and everyone regroups at the resort afterward for the celebration.

Our own guide to the best venues in Singapore for a traditional Hindu wedding covers this in more depth, venue by venue.

Best Weather and Timing for an Outdoor Destination-Style Wedding in Singapore

Weather deserves the same attention as the venue itself, since even a beautifully chosen setting can be undone by an unexpected shower. According to the Meteorological Service Singapore, the northeast monsoon’s wet phase runs from November to January and brings the heaviest rain and the most rainy days of the year, while February is typically the driest month. Rain can still fall in any month, though, so the smarter approach is to plan for it rather than simply hope around it.

Whatever the timing, the fallback plan matters more than the forecast.

  • Favour a morning or early-evening slot. These tend to carry slightly less risk than the mid-afternoon, when thunderstorms are most likely to build.
  • Agree on a wet-weather fallback in writing, before any deposit is paid, and confirm the indoor space can hold the same number of guests as the outdoor one.
  • Set a fixed decision point in the day, so no one is left checking the sky an hour before the ceremony.

How to Start Planning Your Destination-Style Wedding in Singapore

A workable plan tends to follow the same order, whatever the couple’s particular vision looks like. Start by agreeing on a realistic guest range with both families, since this one decision shapes almost everything that follows. From there, shortlist two or three locations, making sure at least one comes with a genuine wet-weather plan rather than a promise.

Once a venue feels right, confirm the legal route, including the choice of solemniser and any documents a foreign partner will need to prepare. From there it’s mostly logistics. Ask the resort to hold a cluster of rooms together for your side of the family, arrange transfers for older relatives who don’t know Singapore well, and send save-the-date messages early enough for any guests flying in to apply for their visas without a last-minute scramble.
